Honored to be a part of the first cohort of Youth Climate Collective (YCC) of Climate Resilient Communities taught by Ms. Njiha Al Asmar.
YCC is an educational program that promotes youth engagement (teenagers to young adults) and leadership in climate justice and environmental topics. The program involves a bi-monthly gathering of workshops at environmentally conscientious organizational field trips. These fieldtrips & workshops provide hands-on experiences and skill development opportunities for students to learn about climate action techniques and to connect with other BIPOC leaders & representatives in the field of environmental science and social justice.
Some sample workshops and our learnings:
The workshop at Stanford University about Climate Models and Project Climate-Related Risks was a fascinating experience. We engaged in hands-on activities with global climate models and flood maps. We also explored the drivers and effects of climate change, linking global processes to local impacts. Understanding the basics of global climate modeling and the role of climate research was particularly enlightening.
The workshop with YUCA (Youth United for Community Action) connected our efforts as youth to broader climate challenges in California, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in addressing environmental issues. It was enlightening to learn about the impact of small-scale solutions and the role of community advocacy in promoting climate resilience.
Graduation day brought a truly memorable moment – receiving my certificate from Ms. Violet Saena, the Executive Director of CRC. Her relentless dedication to environmental justice and climate action has been a huge inspiration in my journey. Grateful for the guidance and wisdom of leaders like her in shaping a better world. 🎓
